Decorating with Old Postcards

I love old postcards. They tell a story. I especially love ones with notes and stamps!
(note for Pink Saturday viewers notice the pink cards! and red cards for rednesday!)

I recently purchased some from Ebay that were from the South Carolina area, since that is where I live. It was nice to see some scenes, bridges, buildings, gardens, etc that once were around (like the old charleston bridge) and some that still are around.(Pedro's South of the Border).

The card above on the lower left has a 6 cent stamp.

I love seeing the changes in stamps : some from 1cent, 3 cent, 5 cent, 6 cent--hmm, not sure if I have shown them all here.

This one above is from 43 and the person was writing from the Citadel in Charleston--must have been doing military training there.

I think this is my oldest one from 1935.

I decided to place these in my half bathroom where there is no shower or tub to do damage to the cards. It is fun to look at them and think of places and old times, and people . I wonder about the people who wrote the notes and licked the stamps. It gives me a warm feeling. ....a connection with the past.

I got this idea from the Rice Paddy Restaraunt in Georgetown, Sc. here . Which has wonderful food and is in an old historic port town. They had postcards in their ladies room and I spent time reading them!

I will link this with PINK SATURDAY which is coming up, since there are lots of pink azelias in the postcards! Go here http://howsweetthesound.typepad.com/my_weblog/ on Saturday for more pink stuffy! Also go here :http://www.suelovescherries.blogspot.com/ for Rednesday on Wednesday!

  1. Kim, the postcards are so interesting. I inherited my mother's postcard collection and treasure it. When my family would travel in the 60s, Mom would buy a postcard from where we visited because it was inexpensive and we could look at it later. Love your ideas for display.

  2. Fun! I thought years ago about copying some antique cards and making a wainscotting with them up our staircase. I love your collection.

  4. The children are darling, what happy smiling faces. What fun this project would be. I can't imagine all those that took the time to write and send them, and the enjoyment those receiving them got while reading them. Such a lost art of communication.. love your collection.

  7. That's a great idea. I used to collect postcards when I was a kid-I'm not sure where they went, but I sure wish I had them now. Thanks for sharing!

  8. I enjoyed seeing your postcards. You have a lovely collection. My grandparents would always send me postcards from their holidays and I still have all the cards. They are not as old as yours as they are probably about 25-30 years old. They are so special to me and I will always treasure them.
In answer to your comment, yes we really are still all at school over here! When we finish we only get 5 weeks holiday. English schools are attended 39 weeks a year.

  9. I love this idea, and they look fantastic! I was looking at some of those old fold-out ones from the 40s at an antique store last weekend. They had such great graphics, from places like Chicago and The Grand Canyon and they were only about $1, and now I'm regretting not getting them. I hate when that happens!
    Happy REDnesday and Happy 4th!

  11. What a delightful visit! I'll have to tell my senior mom about your postcards. She loves to send them to her grandkids and these would be especially meaningful as they are from her youth. Thank you for sharing them. :)

  14. Old post cards are so fun to read and wonder about. Putting them on the wall is a great idea. Your yellow walls are almost exactly like mine. I love your little cottage, especially all of the spindles, very quaint and cozy.

  15. Hi Kim...

Ohhh...I love old postcards too! They are like voices from the past...telling old stories! You have a wonderful collection and I love that you used them for your half bath's decor...that's a great idea! I recently received an entire packet of old vintage postcards that were written and saved by family! Some are dated 1910 or so. People wrote so much more than they do these days and a postcard was perfect for just dropping a line or two. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely postcard collection with us...such a treat!

I also wanted to thank you for coming by and taking a peek at my master bedroom transformation and for leaving such a sweet note! Thank you!!!

    Warmest wishes,

  17. Fascinating collection! I love old postcards, especially the ones that have actually been used and have gone through the mail. I agree that it's fun to see how the price of mailing a card has "evolved" through the years.

    Have a happy 4th!

  26. What a cute and fun idea! I love old postcards too. I like to read the back of them. The language is so different if they're very old and it's fun to see the postal rates. I have a couple that have one cent stamps on them!

  27. what a great collection. i love vintage inspired anything, and these are fab. i had to hold myself back from buying a set of vintage inspired hawaii postcards when we were there.

thanks so much for stopping by the cape on the corner, and for your comment on my stripping adventure/fiasco. as i was peeling off the layers (5!) i really was thinking about what the piece has been used as and by whom.

  28. PCs hold great sentimental emotions. My Dad traveled a lot, and he sent cards to my children, and they value them.

When i was little, he went to Eirope, they were eaten by termites and they were gone. BUt they are in my heart.

    Thanks for visiting.
